hakuoki: kyoto winds

Is it too late to jump in a 10year-old fandom?

Hakuoki – here, there, everywhere

You probably have encountered Hakuoki, one way or another. You may have seen the anime or perhaps played the first version in PS2 or in PSP or in pretty much every console and handheld available. Or you may have also played its many spinoffs. Point is, Hakuoki is everywhere. But because of its massive following and intimidating list of games, I thought about not touching this game for the rest of my life.

Yet here I am, playing it and I’d be lying to say that I am not enjoying my time with the Shinsengumi.

Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds

I came in not knowing a thing about Hakuoki, other than a small bit of information I got after watching the first few episodes of the anime back in… whatever year that was. www  Which also means that I have no idea about Kyoto Winds (and Edo Blossoms) other than this is the remastered version of the first game. To be exact, Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds is the first half of the story focusing on Chizuru’s time with the Shinsengumi in Kyoto. In short, it is just a common route containing short scenes with the guys sprinkled all over.

This port has 3 additional routes. A whopping 12-characters all in all. So think of the game as playing the common route 12 times www.

From what I understood, there is no recommended route order so I can start with anyone. Right now, I’m in the middle of my first playthrough and going after Heisuke. I’m actually at a loss on who should I start with or which route should I play next. I’m just going through whoever I feel like at the moment. Perhaps I’ll do Sanan then the main guys, leaving Okita, Hijikata, and Chikage last before going after the added routes.

As much as I want to see the changes in every Hakuoki game, I can’t find an article which details the added extras in each game. Sad. Though the minor changes like blinking and mouth movements give off that “new” game feel. Too bad, the guys still don’t say Chizuru’s name even if you leave it in default.

For the routes, I’ll talk about the guys in groups. That’s 3 guys per post.

Till next time. 😀

  1. Oh man I can’t even remember when I last played Hakuouki. I actually had no clue what Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms was even about www I’m pretty sure tho the games also have the fandiscs included??? Or one of them does?? I literally have no clue LOL. It’s been so long since I followed anything Hakuouki ^q^ I literally just ignore it now www I did like it a decent amount when it first came out but at this point it’s like lord, so many games, I have no clue what’s going on, etc www

I hope you enjoy it tho!! Looking forward to your reviews~

  2. I think wordpress ate my comment, but on the off chance I submitted two, you can ignore one of them www

I used to love Hakuouki when it first came out. But as time went on I basically just began to ignore the title because of how often it was appearing www I did get excited when it got localized but dang I haven’t followed the fandom in ages lmao I actually have no clue what Kyoto Winds/Edo Blossoms is even about ^q^ I’m pretty sure the game also includes the fandiscs though? I’m not entirely sure, but I think I heard that somewhere. I could be wrong tho haha

Anyways I hope you enjoy it! I’m looking forward to your reviews!!

    1. I accidentally approved both comments lol. /o

Anyway, I have no clue either lolol. I’ve read some summaries from Zuiroku and some scenes definitely appear in Kyoto Winds. I ended up liking the ones from Zuiroku because it shows the progress in the relationship between Chizuru and the guys.

Maybe the other scenes that aren’t included will be inserted in the Edo Blossoms. I’m just not sure. This franchise is soooo confusing lmao.

Thank you! I’m enjoying this game more than I expected. 😀

      1. Lol I know!! I’m always so confused too. I can’t even remember the majority of the first game tbh because it was so long ago ^q^ I think maybe some scenes are missing too tho from the fandiscs, or at least that’s what I heard. I’m not entirely sure lmao we’re just gonna be confused forever, I think www

I kinda wanna buy the two games just to relive the Hakuouki series but I think I’ll wait for it to go on sale or something first ww cus my backlog is way too long ;q; www

        1. Forever confused wwww. I think that’s the right words haha.

If you have Steam acct, you might want to buy it over there during sale. It’s a looooot cheaper ww. Though the side stories (??) can be purchased separately. About $2 for each game? I think? www

          1. Yeah I saw it went on sale really soon after release on steam which always surprises me www I kinda want the vita version so I can take it on the go but I think I’ll end up getting it on steam where it’ll go for super super cheap 😂😂😂😂😂
