But.

BUT.

OH MY GOD the tea on Rufeng Sect is *chefs kiss.*

Festivities are often accompanied by banging sounds, fireworks, and general happy vibes. This wedding feels the same yet different. The outlandish revelations that follow overshadow the lavish ceremony. Each secret is more outrageous than the last one. And I love them! What I love most about this event is how it calls back to the first case of Mo Ran and Chu Wanning from the first volume. Back then, I thought it was a random event, but it turns out to be pretty important in the story.

“So he had acted without hesitation, even at the cost of crossing boundaries and attracting suspicion. He wanted those he had wronged in the previous lifetime to live better this time around ― not just Chu Wanning ,but the others as well. He still hoped to atone for his crimes.”

After volumes 3 and 4, I obviously just want more CWN x MR. It took me a while to actually root for MR but here we are. I love how he turns from the tyrant TXJ to the confused teen to the grieving teen/young man to a zongshi who now vows to make things right and atone for his sins. His simping to CWN gives me life. (I have also gotten peace at the fact that while they are teacher x disciple, MR is actually older than CWN in terms of years.)

“He was just so handsome ― too damn handsome. So handsome that even being subjected to Chu Winning’s glares, reprimands, and eye rolls left Mo Ran ecstatic in the face of such beauty.”

MR is whipped for CWN.

“His shizun, his Wanning ― how was he so damn gorgeous?”

Mo Ran might be crass but tender moments like this makes me melt.

“In this harsh world, Mo Ran only wanted to use his own flesh and blood to surround Chu Wanning with warmth. That was all.”

I started liking Chu Wanning earlier than MR, and this volume reminded me why I liked him in the first place. He is selfless and despite his cold demeanor, he is full of love. You might say that he isn’t right in punishing MR in the first volume, and I might answer that in their time period, that’s the standard for disciplining a student. But let’s not forget that CWN never really knew love and compassion because he never experienced them before. He is awkward when it comes to expressing his feelings simply because he don’t know how. So while I don’t agree with his harsh actions, I get where he’s coming from.

Chu Wanning sighed. “Many things in this world can’t be evaluated on appearances alone. Sometimes, even digging one layer down isn’t enough to unearth the truth. I remind myself always to rein in my emotions before rendering judgment, whether on people or actions ― it always pays to be cautious. But sometimes I can’t help myself.”

“Even when Chu Wanning was afraid, he clung to himself instead of others.”
