“No matter the species, the one labelled as strange is always the first to be cast out.”
The God & the Flightless Messenger is about two misfits finding their way to one another. This is a one volume manga and a sweet story at that.
Shin (the one with the black outfit from the cover) has been training to be a god’s messenger his whole life. Being a messenger means that he has to assist his god in every way possible and that means going to and fro places. His small wings is a hindrance to that. And that’s what his teacher and fellow messengers think. The great mountain lord thinks otherwise for he gives Shin a chance: become a messenger to an unknown god.
You just can’t help but root for Shin. Sure, he gets into fights almost always when other messengers make fun of him, but he’s sincere and dedicated to his job and to his god.
Speaking of Shin’s god, Baku is the fluffiest thing I’ve ever read in a manga. He’s this massive fluff of a ball and has this perpetual innocent look on him. His human form reminds me so much of the transformed Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho. But Baku keeps a secret that might make or break his relationship with Shin.
I think what melted me into the story was Baku’s first appearance. He was the first character who treated Shin nicely. He never judged his messenger and was actually really receptive to Shin’s suggestions. And that felt really nice considering all the characters that appeared prior to Baku’s appearance looked down on Shin.
This manga is short and sweet, and it is also very light on the spicy scale. There’s not even a proper kiss. Just a peck on the lips. It suits the overall vibe of the story though so I’m not complaining.
What are your thoughts? Have you read this manga?
