From Novel Updates:

“I curse you to never die in peace!”

Thus, Shang Ke started a never-ending (forced) cycle of constantly throwing away his miserable life.

He would always show himself as a martyr while letting others cry over his death.

It was because of a woman’s curse that Shang Ke was hit by a car and turned into a human vegetable. This led to him becoming bound by an unlucky system in which he was cursed to die. The most unfortunate part was that he never cheated on anyone’s feelings. The reason for why he was cursed by a woman was because of a guy named Qi Chen. Qi Chen was a ladies man, and he would always use Shang Ke as an excuse to break up with any woman that he was with. As a result, Shang Ke was always blamed for the breakups. Since then, the main character could only be forced to cross into different worlds. He would thus experience for himself, the hero’s “thrill”.

It’s HE.

MTL-ing this fried my brain cells but it was worth it!

Different worlds, different kinds of reincarnation

I read this right after finishing Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil which is probably a bad idea. I loved QWFOD so much that I fear it might affect how much I would like this HDS.

Heroic Death System has unique worlds. Sure, it has the usual modern story, intergalactic, and ABO worlds but there are others that are beyond my expectations. I’ll tell you about the worlds later but here’s a preview for some of them. There’s a world where Shang Ke’s a mushroom, A FREAKING MUSHROOM. Then there’s also when he’s a dolphin. Not yet enough? Okay, how about reincarnating as a pen? Or better yet, reincarnating as a ghost?

Backtracking Keys

If you’ll look at the table of contents, there are titles where there’s a Re: in them. Those are restart worlds. Shang Ke can go back and redo the world, granted that he achieves certain points from other worlds. It’s like, we’re only given the first half of the story then the redos are the second part.

While I enjoyed all the worlds, some just really stood out among the rest. And I was pretty convinced that it will stay that way until I finished the series. But reading the Backtracking worlds changed my mind. You’ll see how ML and how the rest of those who care for Shang Ke suffer and grieve Shang Ke’s death.

But it’s not all tears and heartbreaks. Since this is a redo arc, Shang Ke is given a chance to make it a happy end. Thanks to this second chances, I’m able to give ML a second chance as well, especially on worlds where his possessiveness runs wild.

System

Unlike other reincarnation novels where the System just pops out of nowhere and gives tasks to the MC, the System here is actually integrated within the story. There’s a reason why it’s there.

Besides that, I had fun reading the parts where System trolls Shang Ke.

Ending

“When he (Shang Ke) saw the young boy who smiled at him on the playground, there is a wonderful premonition. They will never be separated again this time…”

— edited from the MTL

I read that some people are not happy with the ending so I was prepared to be disappointed as well. I procrastinated the last arc because I didn’t want this to end.

But when I arrived at the ending, I was so happy.

It was more of an open-ending-slash-happy-ending. I expected to crave for more fluff times. But after reading the last chapter especially that last paragraph above, while the author did not flat-out mention, I knew that they are going to have a wonderful reincarnation this time. They’ve both encountered the ups and downs in their relationships and we’ve seen them work things out. This time, with no more obstacles and tasks, I’m confident that they’ll still have a wonderful life ahead (with Shang Ke lecturing ML for the good manners, right conduct, and sex education lol).

Characters

Shang Ke

He’s such an adorable and enjoyable MC. Part of enjoying the worlds is how he handles them. He can be cheeky at times. And even in dire situations, he can still be so chill. He isn’t OP when he started. He’s a noob who fumbles and stumbles a lot, but I ended up rooting for him on his journey to find his true love~.

I also love how even when faced with a domineering ML, Shang Ke manages to teach him a lesson or two. He is very patient in teaching the low EQ ML on how he should treat his partner.

Neutral (¯ . ¯٥)

ML

What I feel about the world depends on what I feel about ML. In some worlds, he’s the OP, domineering, kinda rapey, and full of vigor seme. But thanks to backtracking keys, where he learns his lesson the hard way, I kind of liked him.

On worlds where he’s really gentle and caring, ay, I loveet. At the top of my head, those happened in the dolphin and the ghost arcs.

Enjoyment (✯◡✯)

I enjoyed this a lot even with the slight angst in each arc that made me teared up. It’s not that this is so tragic, more of it is angsty. Plus like I’ve said above, I enjoyed all the different worlds available. The worlds never failed to surprise me and they even exceed my expectations.

I enjoyed this more because of Shang Ke as the MC and his cheekiness. Plus, his kids, adopted or not, are really cute!

Highlights

The highlights are a lot and they all happen within the individual worlds which I’ll talk about in the next post. 😋
